MANU DIBANGO: AFRICAN SAXOPHONE LEGEND DIES OF COVID-19

African saxophone legend Manu Dibango has died in Paris after catching coronavirus. The Dibango – best known for his 1972 song Soul Makossa – is one of the first global stars to die from Covid-19.  The 86-year-old fused jazz and funk music with traditional sounds from his home country, Cameroon.  “It is with deep sadness that we announce you the loss of Manu Dibango, our Papy Groove,” a statement on his official Facebook page read.  His funeral will take place in “strict privacy”, the statement read, asking instead for people to send condolences by email and adding that a tribute will be arranged “when possible”. Born in the Cameroonian city of Douala in 1933, which at the time was under French colonial rule, Dibango’s musical career spanned across more than six decades. FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS MUST BE AGGRESSIVE - WHO

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says world leaders and health officials won’t be able to defeat COVID-19 if they rely only on defensive measures such as social distancing and requiring people to stay at home. He indicated that for the world to win we need to attack the virus with aggressive and targeted tactics. He said the deadly virus has now spread to nearly every country on the planet hence the need to attack it aggressively. “The pandemic is accelerating,” Tedros said. “It took 67 days from the first reported case to reach the first 100,000 cases, 11 days for the second 100,000 cases and just four days for the third 100,000 cases.” "But we’re not prisoners to statistics. We’re not helpless bystanders. We can change the trajectory of this pandemic.” He added: “You can’t win a football game only by defending. You have to attack as well,” Tedros said at a briefing in Geneva.

COVID-19; KUMASI CENTER FOR NATIONAL CULTURE CLOSED DOWN

The Kumasi Centre for National Culture has been temporarily closed down to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The closing of the most popular tourist attraction in Kumasi is being done as a precaution and in keeping with the recommendation of the President directives to avoid the transmission of COVID-19 from close, personal contact in large gatherings. Barima Assumadu Sakyi who is the Director of the Center disclosed that, they are closing down the facility as precaution and help curb the spreading of the virus.

ENSURE SANITIZERS ARE DULY REGISTERED BEFORE PURCHASE – FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has asked the Ghanaian public to be cautious when buying hand sanitizers in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in Ghana. The FDA said although it has increased its surveillance across the country to ensure fake sanitizers are not released onto the market to endanger the lives of Ghanaians, the public must also be cautious when making a purchase. The director of communications, James Lartey speaking to Nana Ampratwum on Silver fm morning show, Omanbapa sighted by Africanewsgh said “The general public must ensure that all hand sanitizers purchased are duly registered by the FDA and have not expired. “The FDA is also facilitating the registration of more hand sanitizers with a fast track process to mitigate the shortage on the market.” He also discouraged the use of homemade sanitizers being taught on social media as it hasn’t been tested and approved and doesn’t meet the standard.
