NDC MPs demand withdrawal of security deployed to Parliament ahead of Akufo-Addo’s inauguration
The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate withdrawal of security personnel who were deployed to Parliament ahead of President Akufo-Addo’s swearing-in on Thursday, January 7.
A statement signed by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu accused the government of using the National Security to advance parochial partisan interests, which in his view is an affront to the dignity of the legislative arm of government.
According to him, the Parliament “represents the bulwark of democracy in the country”, therefore, government’s use of a “Gestapo-style security invasion” on the premises is in contempt of the House.
But reacting to this, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Obiri Yeboah has justified the reason behind the massive security at the the Parliament.
According to him, he doesn't know why the Minority are complaining bitterly about the deployment of the security at the Parliament house ahead of the swearing in tommorrow.
He added that, the Minority might have bad intentions ahead of the inaugration tommorrow.

We don't commiserate with armed robbers - Joe Wise justifies Akufo-Addo's silence on Techiman South death
In his immediate critique of President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader of Parliament identified the president’s silence on the persons killed during the 2020 election as a major flaw of the address.
Describing it as ‘conspicuous’, Haruna Iddrisu bemoaned President Akufo-Addo’s failure to capture the death of five people in the elections in the final address of his first term.
“This honourable house thanks the President for the message on the state of the nation…. Mr President, we leave our fractured democracy in your hands. Conspicuously lost in your speech is the loss of lives in Techiman and other parts of Ghana,” the Minority Leader stated.
The same sentiment was expressed by political science lecturer Professor Ransford Gyampo who criticized President Akufo-Addo for ignoring the election-related deaths in his address.
“A speech coming just after our election that witnessed some deaths should have contained some comment about the needless loss of lives, commiseration with the family of the departed, as well as some vow and commitment to resolving infractions of the law, with the view to forestalling the recurrence of such unwarranted deaths in any future elections,” a part of Gyampo’s statement reads.
While the aforementioned political figures shudder to comprehend why President Akufo-Addo will turn a blind eye to an issue of such nature, Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker has offered a probable cause for the president’s action.

There is no Majority or Minority in Parliament- Klutse Avedzi jabs Afenyo Markin
Member of Parliament for Ketu North Constituency, Hon Klutse Avedzi has stated that, base on the results declared by the Electoral Commission, they are niether Majority nor Minority in Parliament.
According to him, there is no Majority and Minority Parliament.
He added that, he noted that the addition of the Fomena MP to the NPP side does not instantaneously make them majority.
To argue out his point, the Ketu North MP said the constitution was clear, that the independent candidate can only decide which side of the house to join after it had clearly been determined which of the parties formed both majority and minority.
“The constitution was clear, that after the determination of parties with majority, and the minority, the independent member will then decide, which side of the house to work with. First of all, we have to determine the majority and minority side, before that independent member decides to work with you or not.
“He should not interpret the constitution and mislead the public. Now we do not have majority, we don’t have minority, we have a hung parliament,” he insisted.
He this comments after Member of the Parliament for the Effutu constituency Hon. Alexasnder Afenyo Markin established the fact that the NPP has an upper hand in the determination of who forms the majority, considering the declaration of the Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako to join the NPP side in the august house.
