EC directives to the NDC is a step in the right direction- CODEO

The National Coordinator for the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Mr. Albert Arhin has stated that, the EC directives to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to summit their proposal to the Interparty advisory committee (IPAC) is a step in the right direction.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), is proposing the appointment of Commissioners of the Electoral Commission (EC) to be subjected to parliamentary approval.

This is part of the opposition party’s over thirty proposed recommendations for electoral reforms.

The NDC makes a point that the current mode of appointing Chairpersons of the electoral management body and its members appears partisan, arguing that representatives of the people must have a hand in the appointment.

But the EC said they do not deal with individual political parties, rather it is the IPAC that does that.

“We don’t deal with individual parties, and IPAC is designed to promote multi-party views, so IPAC is the right forum for such discussion.

“So we responded to their proposals and asked the party to bring it to IPAC,” the elections management body said.

Mr. Arhin speaking to the media said, he believes if it will help a lot if the NDC summit their report to the IPAC.
