Sputnik V procurement: Laws must be applied equally – Charlotte Osei

Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, has urged that the country’s laws be applied equally.

She believes democracy is only effective when the rules are not selectively applied to favour a certain class of people when they fall foul of the laid down procedure.

“The rule of law must apply; we must treat all people the same,” she said in the wake of controversies surrounding the Health Ministry’s Covid-19 vaccines procurement drive.

Mrs. Osei was removed from office by the Akufo-Addo’s administration for alleged procurement breaches.

Many have claimed that the said breach is similar to the infractions committed by Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu.

The Minister is currently receiving criticism over a botched contract to secure some Sputnik V vaccines.

Mr. Agyeman-Manu admitted before an ad hoc committee that he circumvented parliamentary approval in his quest to get the jabs supplied to Ghana.

He subsequently denied any knowledge of payments advanced to the Dubai-based middleman, Sheikh Dalmook Al Maktoum, in that regard.

No more coronavirus burials by us – Environmental officers lay down tools

From today, Wednesday, August 18, families of COVID-19 infected dead persons will have to bury their relatives themselves because those in charge and mandated to do so are on strike.

The Environmental Health Officers Alliance Ghana (EHOAG) has suspended the burial of all Covid-19 victims in the country as its leadership laments government has refused to provide the members with the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and logistics to carry out their duties.

The National President for EHOAG, Yaw Akwaa Lartey, who doubles as the acting District Environmental Health Officer for Denkyembour District in the Eastern Region, speaking to the media revealed that “since the invasion of Covid-19 in Ghana, we the environmental health officers who are in charge of burying Covid-19 dead bodies have been buying nose masks, gloves and other basic safety gears ourselves”.

According to him, Government doesn’t provide them, the frontlines, the basic wears that will ensure their work is safe from infections.

The EHOAG National President further added that “government is only interested in providing the necessary logistics for Ministry of Health that is nurses and doctors, neglecting us to the mercy of possible Covid-19 infections from the dead bodies we bury, hence we have laid down our tools, we won’t risk our lives anymore”.

The youth are getting disappointment in our governance – Mahama

The 2020 National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about youth unemployment rate in the country.

Addressing the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs while on a “Thank You” tour of the region said, the youth unemployment is a major problem in Africa, citing recent agitations by youth in Nigeria to buttress his point.

Citing what happened in Nigeria, he said “In Nigeria, they had the SASS movement – it was like a rebellion against Police repression, but who those who took part in the SASS movement are? It was the unemployed youth. And the point is, let’s not think that if you are enriching yourself, you are safe.

According him, when the youth rise up, they think that everyone who is living a good life is one of the people oppressing them and that is why they cannot get jobs so if you are driving a nice car, they will break your glass and molest you.

Mr. Mahama said such a situation should not be allowed to occur in Ghana.

….MAHAMA ON YOUTH…..

John Dramani Mahama has denied financing the #FixTheCountry demonstration recently staged in Accra.

He has, therefore, described as an “absolute lie”, a claim by communicators of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government that he sponsored the protest with GH¢1.5 million.

Every hospital project has their own source of funding- Dr. Nsiah Asare

Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Nsiah Asare has stated that, every hospital projects the government is embarking on has their own source of funding.

Addressing the media today at the Office of the Ministry of Information said, they can’t use Eurojet fund for another project and the government will fund for this Agenda 111initiative.

According to him, the government has a vision towards human capital development which is, “Digitization to make sure that we have smart economy in this country, To have educated people in the country and To have Healthy people in the country”.

He added that, they realized that, there are some residents in a district who will suffer to get access to health care looking at the distance they will travel to the District Capital.

He noted that, “A district like Atwima Kwanwoma, if they construct the Hospital at Twedie which the Western side of the district and leave Kwanwoma side which is the Eastern side of the district, then nobody can visit Twedie for Health care hence the need for them to add hospitals to some places which amounted to the Agenda 111”.

President Akufo Addo yesterday cut the sod for the construction of hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative at Trede in the Atwima Kwanwoma District.
