Hypocrisy is preventing some Ghanaians from criticising Akufo-Addo govt – Mahama

The 2020 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has accused some Ghanaians of being “hypocritical” in their criticism of the Akufo-Addo government.

The former President said some Ghanaians only find their voice of reproach whenever the NDC is in power but fail to do the same when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) takes the reigns of government.

“That is what is referred to as hypocrisy by the westerners. Hypocrisy is what is depriving the society of development because people don’t speak the truth anymore…we have to use the same standards for everyone, and that’s one of the problems we have,” he said.

Mr. Mahama, in an interview with Techiman-based Akina radio, recounted how the NPP peddled falsehoods against himself and his administration in the build-up to the 2016 general election.

“I stood at Techiman here and challenged Nana Akufo-Addo and his government to prove to Ghanaians now that they are in power, who actually owns DKM and account to Ghanaians the monies they retrieved from DKM. It even turned out that some of the staff of the microfinance scams were appointed by the Akufo-Addo government,” he said.

There were reports in 2016 that former First Lady, Lordina Mahama, owned the now-defunct microfinance company that collapsed after taking a lot of money from prospective investors.

But Mr Mahama told the teeming crowd at Techiman as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour of the Bono Region that all those were part of a calculated attempt by his opponent to discredit him.

Do or die comment: Allotey Jacobs sends strong message to Mahama

Former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to former President John Mahama to apologise for his infamous ‘do or die’ comment.

Bernard Allotey Jacobs said it will be politically suicidal if elders in the opposition party does not advise their 2020 flagbearer to eat a humble pie.

This advise comes after Mr Mahama has stated emphatically that, he would not apologise for his ‘do or die’ comment explaining it is an idiomatic expression.

He maintained that; it is a call to duty for members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be vigilant at the polling station in the 2024 general election.

This has generated heated debate between the New Patriotic Party ( NPP) and NDC.

Members of the NDC stand by the comment made by the former President but the NPP insists the comment is to incite violence.

Mr Jacobs believes Mr Mahama would have avoided the needless attacks if he had admitted it was a “slip of tongues.”

“Just say it was a slip of tongue and apologise to the people of Ghana,” he said while reacting to the viral comment by Mahama.

The former NDC Regional Chairman said he condemns the ‘do or die’ comment in no uncertain terms just like he condemned ‘All-die-be-die’.

“Sometimes we should not by hypocritical; I condemned Akufo-Addo for All-die-be die and I will condemn Mahama too. I appeal to him to apologise,” Mr Jacobs added.

Aid to Bawumia reacts to Mahama’s ‘do or die’ comment

Aide to Vice President, Dr, Mahamudu Bawumia is disappointed at the ‘do or die’ comment made by former President John Mahama.

Dr Gideon Boako has contended that such inflammable comments have the tendency to plunge the country in to chaos.

Mr Mahama’s comment which has caused outraged in the media has been explained as a call on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be vigilant at the polling station to ensure the 2024 election is not rigged.

Civil society organisations and political leaders have called on him to retract and apologise for the comment.

But, John Mahama is standing by his words explaining that the comment is an “idiomatic expression”.

Dr Gideon Boako speaking to the media said, the position by Mr Mahama does not make him an alternative to President Akufo-Addo.

As a leader seeking to lead Ghana in 2024, he said the former President must be seen to be seeking the peace of the country.

“As a political leader, your followers take your words as the gospel truth and may engage in violence so Mahama must apologise,” he advised.

Dr Boako called on John Mahama not to let his quest for power affect the peace and security Ghanaians are enjoying.

Govt to transform economy to a value-added, industrialized one – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said government is trying its best to transform the local economy.

This will help reduce the production and exportation of raw materials and encourage a value-added and industrialised one.

According to him, this will create a sustainable and more resilient economy that will in turn create job opportunities for Ghanaians.

The initiative is to make Ghana an investment destination in West Africa as well as make the country attractive to investors.

“Government has made deliberate efforts at determining the investment priorities of our country and taken steps to mobilise the necessary resources for the growth of these priority areas.

“This is because we want to help transform Ghana from being a mere producer and exporter of raw materials to a value-added, industrialised economy that will provide opportunities, jobs and prosperity for all Ghanaians, thereby creating a wiser nation, that is wealthy, inclusive, sustainable, empowered and resilient,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He said this at the maiden edition of Spark Up programme organised by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo, therefore, called on the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre and other agencies to create an enabling environment for investors.

“Do or die affair” not a good comment- Major Oduro

Former Deputy Defense Minister, Hon. Derrick Oduro (Rtd) has stated that, former Presiden, John Dramani Mahama’s “do or die affair” comment is nothing good to write home about.

According to him, though he agrees with Mahama that, some idiomatic expression varies from the interpretation being spun on it.

He asked Mahama and the NDC if they have forgotten how they roasted President Akufo Addo when he said “all die be die”?

He added that, President Akufo tried to defend himself that what he said varied from what they thought.

He made these comments when former President John Dramani Mahama has justified his recent comments about the 2024 elections, saying he only used an English idiomatic expression which does not connote the interpretation being spun on it.

On Tuesday, September 7 at the start of the resumption of his Thank You tour in the Bono East Region, the 2020 flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the next polls must be won at the polling stations and it will be “do or die”.

Major Oduro noted that, Akufo Addo “all die be die” and John Dramani Mahama’s “Do or die” are two different things.

Guineans don’t believe in ECOWAS – Activist

Guinean activist Mohamed Djala Jalloh has said that the citizens of Guinea do not believe in the sub-regional body ECOWAS.

According to him, this is because the 15-member regional political and economic union, watched on, while President Alpha Conde ruled the country in ways that defied the Constitution and their democracy.

Mr. Jalloh speaking to the media said, “the population does not have any belief towards ECOWAS, because of what so far has been going on the ground for over a year now since Alpha Conde got power during this third mandate here. People don’t believe in the ECOWAS and the way they are doing their things.”

His comment comes after ECOWAS scheduled a virtual emergency meeting on Wednesday, September 8, to discuss the happenings in Guinea.

Although the meeting, chaired by President Akufo-Addo (Ghana) ended earlier in the day, ECOWAS did not immediately release a statement on the decision they took to restore Guinea to constitutional rule. Meanwhile, there are rumours ECOWAS is likely to place some sanctions on Guinea, including the closure of neighbouring borders and demand an immediate return to civilian rule.

However, Mr Jalloh believes that the people of Guinea are seeing a lot of efforts being done to right the wrongs of President Alpha Conde.

He revealed that the military, which took over power has plans to release 711 people wrongfully incarcerated without trial, under President Conde.

He stated that already, 80 people have been released from the prisons to their families with many Guineans celebrating the release of some activists who have been in jail for about six months or more.

Mr Jalloh said, “the process is going to go on in the next few days because they need to check out the papers and analyse all the papers before they release some of the prisoners.”
