About 30,000 household toilet facilities are expected to be provided for people in low-income communities in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA).

Additionally, a total of 5,000 households will be supported to connect potable water into their homes, under the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project.

This is to help ensure increased access to improved toilet and water facilities to the majority of poor and vulnerable people in urban and peri-urban communities.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah said this at a day’s orientation workshop on the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project for some media personnel in Kumasi.

The workshop was aimed at introducing the project which was launched in November last year to the media in the Ashanti region.

Madam Dapaah said the facilities would be maintained and expanded as the population in those areas increased.

The Minister pointed out that the water supply in Kumasi was not good, saying the Owabi headworks in the Atwima Nwabiaqya District would soon be dredged.

The government she said was providing pragmatic measures to find a lasting solution to the water and sanitation problems in Kumasi.

Government lacks commitment in prosecuting NAM 1 – Aggrieved Menzgold Customers

Customers of the defunct gold dealership firm, Menzgold, have vowed to use available avenues to retrieve their locked-up investments from the company.

Public Relations Officer for the Association, Fred Forson speaking to the media accused the government of Ghana for failing to protect funds of the investors, a development that continues to deepen their hopelessness by the day.

He bemoaned that “unconcerned posture” of the government, saying they (customers) “are yet to see any remedy by the government or its agencies in assisting customers to retrieve their locked up investments.”

According to him, the rampant adjournment of the criminal case [which has been running for three years] has shown that till date, the state’s prosecution team has not been able to even proffer charges for trial.

He revealed that, about ten members of the association was buried last two weeks due to failure of the government to deal with this issue.

The UK does not want to be a destination for corrupt money – High Commissioner to Ghana

The UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson says even though the ongoing digitisation drive by the Ghana government is commendable in its attempts to curb low-level corruption, it is equally important that Ghanaians are convinced that no one is immune to prosecution at the high level.

Speaking in her first interview with the media since she arrived in Ghana in June this year, she said the fight against corruption is closely linked to many of the activities the UK is involved in the country.

She cited digitisation and how by moving more government services online, opportunities for low-level corruption are reduced.

“In reducing the human to human contact in moving more government services online, they are reducing the opportunities for corruption at low levels in the system.

“At the higher levels, it is so important for people to see that no one is immune to prosecution. If people steal money, they will be prosecuted for stealing money,” HC Thompson averred.

She cited work being done by the UK government around illicit financial flows and countering money laundering as critical to the fight against corruption.

She was emphatic “the UK does not want to be the destination for corrupt money. And so it is important for people in Ghana and across the world to know that if they try to hide their ill-gotten gains in the UK, the UK’s crime agencies will be looking for them.”

HC Thompson added, where the evidence is clear that political figures and other individuals have engaged in corruption, she will not hesitate to call them out.

These, according to him, are signs the economy is bouncing back.

“Low inflation rate, stable currency, strong reserve position in FDI flows are clear indications of our collective desire to restore the Ghanaian economy onto a path of sustained stability and growth.
