Dr Bawumia touts Juabenhene’s legacy
The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that the 50-year rule of the Juabenhene, Nana Otuo Siriboe II (Chairman of Council of State), has brought nothing but development to the people of Juaben, Asanteman and the country as a whole.
According to him, he is very impressed by the fact that Nana Otuo Serebour started his development agenda not by appealing to government or to donors as it is often done by many these days.
He said the chief appealed to government only when the outlay was beyond the capabilities of the local folks.
Dr Bawumia emphasized that a true and sustainable development was not what was done relying on the charity of others, but by leading through a strategy of self-reliance by organizing harvest and raising funds to support same with the efforts of the people.
The Vice-President was speaking at the launch of a book titled: “Nana Otuo Siriboe II, 1971-2021: Fifty Years of Distinguished Service to Juaben, Asanteman and Ghana” at the Juaben Palace at Juaben in the Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region last Saturday.
The book was authored by Ms Abyna-Ansah Adjei, a member of the Royal Historical Society, the leading learned society for historians in the world.

President commissions $13-million cocoa processing plant
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned a $13-million cocoa processing plant at the Tema Free Zones Enclave.
The installation of the plant, which formed part of Cargill Ghana Limited’s capacity expansion works, took 16 months to complete.
It will increase the plant’s grind capacity by 20 per cent to bolster its annual production from 75,000 to 90,000 tonnes to create more job opportunities.
This latest investment is a culmination of Cargill’s 13-year presence in Ghana, during which it has created employment for about 530 people.
President Akufo-Addo commended Cargill for the expansion works, especially when industries across the globe were scaling down due to the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the completion of the project also underscored the importance of the private sector in the government’s industrial transformation agenda, an anchor to the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.
He said over the past decade, Cargill’s contribution to the growth of the economy in terms of investment and exports had increased from $100 million in 2008 to some $113 million, describing the growth as encouraging.

Criminalizing advocacy of LGBTQI activities is a breach of law, against media freedom-CHRAJ
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has cautioned Parliament to tread cautiously on the anti-LGBT AI bill currently before it for consideration.
CHRAJ says although they are not speaking for or against the bill, there were some fundamental issues that parliament must consider on the bill.
CHRAJ represented by its boss Joseph Whittal at the committee hearing on the bill, today, Monday, November 29, 2021, said parliament could be going for an overreach on some of the provisions of the bill.
Mr. Whittal expressed worry that the bill seeks to criminalize the advocacy of LGBTQI activities and the attempt to jail advocates is a breach of the fundamental rights of the advocates to free speech and free expression.
The freedom of association, the freedom of expression and freedom of the media he explained are fundamental human rights issues but the bill seeks to criminalize the advocacy of LGBTQI meaning that persons who would push back against the bill could face a jail term.
This he opined is problematic and the parliament of Ghana must be guided by that.
He said the bill and its contents seek to deprive members of the LGBTQI community of an opposing view which is guaranteed in our laws.
He told the Eighteen-Member Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament that the Constitution of Ghana is premised on the principles of fundamental human rights and it must be obeyed.
He said LGBTQI persons must not be left behind and leaving them behind is against the Sustainable Development Goals which we are signatories to.

Xavier- Sosu was attending Parliamentary duties- Lawyer
Legal Councilor for embattled Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency (Hon. Francis Xavier- Sosu), Lawyer Victor Adawudu has revealed why his client didn’t show up in court today.
The Kaneshie District Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Madina MP, Francis Sosu.
This was after the MP failed to appear in court for the third time since criminal charges were filed against him.
Lawyer Victor Adawudu speaking to the media said, he told the court the MP is attending a parliamentary committee meeting and was, therefore, unable to show up in court.
Prosecutor, ASP Sylvester Asare, told the court that it was clear that for such a criminal matter, the court had the discretion to issue a warrant for the arrest of the MP.
He insisted the MP cannot send someone to represent him in a criminal matter.
Mr Adawudu insisted the MP was attending parliamentary duties and is not staying away from the court.
The magistrate handling the matter, Oheneba Kuffour, asked the Prosecutor if his team had so far obtained a statement from the MP. ASP Asare said no such statement had been received.
Mr Adawudu told the court the MP had not made any effort to provide a statement because the matter went beyond the Police.
ASP Asare then urged the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the MP.
Mr Adawudu insisted he had filed processes at a higher court challenging the appropriateness of the charges filed against the MP.
