2 Police officers die through violent crime at Zuarungu

The Police say two officers died on Wednesday while on patrol at Zuarungu in the Upper East Region.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori speaking to the media said, the two officers –Constable Emmanuel Akowuah and Constable Mohamed Sule– who were on night patrols were both killed by suspected armed robbers on Wednesday night.

According to him, the robbers shot at the tank of the police motorbike and partially burnt Constable Mohammed Sule while Constable Emmanuel Akowuah was shot in the head.

He added that, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Akufo Dampare has cut short his tour in the Ashanti region and visit Chiefs and Elders of Zuarungu.

He noted that, they will do everything to arrest the suspected armed robbers and will face the law.

He revealed that, the IGP has placed a GH¢50,000 bounty on the heads of the armed robbers.

ACP Kwesi Ofori assured Ghanaians that, they will do everything to protect the lives of them despite this incident.

Ghana spent $1billion on rice imports between 2017-2020

The Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Allan Kyerematen has disclosed that Ghana spent an estimated GH₵6.874 billion on the importation of rice from 2017 to 2020.

He added that within the same period, the country also imported the fish (GH₵3.993 billion), Chicken processed (GH₵1.881 billion), Meat (GH₵487 million), Vegetables (GH₵281million), Poultry (GH₵184 million).

The Minister made the disclosure when he appeared before Parliament to respond to a question by Mr Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central on how much the state spent on the importation of rice and other foodstuffs into the country over the past four years.

Replying to another question about whether the government has lifted a ban on small rice importers, Mr Kyeremanten said rice was a staple food in Ghana and as such one had to maintain a delicate balance between the quantity of rice produced locally and what was imported to ensure that there were no serious shortages.

Mr Kyeremanten stressed that the government has not lifted the ban imposed on the small rice importers but the Ministry has a management policy to ensure that there were no shortages in the system.

He explained that the Ministry would review its position on rice imports when there was significant local rice production in the country.

Man falls from coconut tree to his death at Saltpond

A man, believed to be in his fifties, Kwabena Tantan, has lost his life after falling off a coconut tree at Saltpond in the Mfantsiman Municipality of the Central Region.

Assembly member for Bradoo electoral area, Hon. Stephen Dadzie speaking to the media said, the incident happened at dawn when he was attempting to steal coconut belonging to an aged man in the area.

According to him, this would not be the first time the deceased had been caught stealing coconut.

It is unclear what led to his fall as he is said to be one of the hardened climbers in the area.

He was found lying dead in a gutter beneath the coconut tree, with over 20 plucked coconuts surrounding him.

The body has been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital morgue awaiting investigation and burial.

Inmates of Kumasi Central Prison screened, received donation from Sompahemaa foundation

Inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison have benefited from a health screening exercise organized by Sompahemaa foundation.

A team of health workers led by Mrs. Irene Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who is the founder of Sompahemaa foundation screened hundreds of inmates of Hepatitis B, diabetes, prostrate breast cancer and other medical conditions free of charge.

Speaking to Silver fm’s Akwadaa Nyame said, beneficiaries who tested positive were given instant medication while others were taking to hospitals for treatment and those who tested negative were vaccinated against various viral diseases.

The team also checked their blood pressure, blood groups, sugar levels and provided ultrasound scan services as well.

Additionally, the foundation donated some items worth millions of cedis.

Mrs. Irene Osei Kyei Mensah also known as Sompahemaa said the exercise formed part of her corporate social responsibility to vulnerable.

Covid-19 vaccines:  The vaccines has three benefits- GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged Ghanaians to as a matter of urgency get vaccinated to help curb the spread of the virus.

Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Aboagye Dacosta  addressing the media today at the Ministry of Information in Accra said, “The vaccine has three benefits, ie, getting transmitted is very slow, second is that, you are not likely to get sick and thirdly, you are not likely to die.

Earlier President Akufo Addo addressing Ghanaians on his 27th update of measures taken against the spread of coronavirus in the country urged Ghanaians to get vaccinated and stop listening to the naysayers who are criticizing about the covid-19 vaccines.

According to Dr. Aboagye Dacosta, they have local information to prove that, numbers of people who are in the ICU are not vaccinated.

Christmas Eve: Drive with care- Reg. Minister to drivers

Ashanti regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah has advised drivers in the region to drive with care to help prevent road accidents as Christmas Eve is approaching.

Director-General of the MTTD, Dr. Samuel Sasu-Mensah, has stated that 80% to 90% of road accidents that occur in the country are attributable to driver behaviour.

He noted that most drivers who ply the roads do not comply with laid-down traffic rules and regulations.

Hon. Osei Mensah urged the drivers to drive like how they transport eggs to another place without breaking any of them.

He added that, many people have become disabled due to the carelessness of drivers on the road.

He again advised them to observe all the safety protocols of covid-19 to help curb the spread of the virus in the Eve.
