Our Covid-19 OPDs are filling up – GHS

Head of Critical and Severe Cases at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Chris Owoo, has revealed that the Outpatient Department (OPD) at the Ghana Infectious Disease Center is receiving a significant number of Covid-19 patients.

Speaking to the media, he stated that statistics show that the majority of those infected are individuals who have not been vaccinated.

According to him, “Their Covid OPDs are already filling up as I speak now. If you come to the Ghana Infectious Disease Center, what you would have is over 30 or 40 people whereas 4 weeks ago we had 1, 2 or even 0. Majority of those who are coming to the OPDs with mild or moderate diseases are still those who are unvaccinated but the proportions are about 60 to 70 per cent unvaccinated and 40 to 30 per cent who are vaccinated.

He added that, those who are coming into their ICUs are those unvaccinated and they have shown evidence that in their facility that 98 per cent of those who have ended up requiring ICUs are those who did not vaccinate.

Dr. Owoo also indicated that health workers are contracting the deadly coronavirus disease and records show the number is on the rise.

He revealed that, they started picking up new infections and it is gradually rising.

Meanwhile, data released from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) shows that 13 people have died from Covid-19 in the past six days.

As of December 18, Ghana’s death toll stood at 1,269. Four new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, which led to that figure.

Currently, active and new cases stand at 3,165 and 321 respectively.

Thank you for helping Ghana become No.1 gold producer in Africa – Bawumia to small-scale miners

Vice President Dr Mahama Mahamudu Bawumia has commended small scale miners in Ghana for the effort in helping Ghana become the number one producer of gold in Africa.

Dr Bawumia noted that currently, it is estimated that the Small Scale mining contributes about 35% to Ghana’s total Gold production.

“35% is huge,” he said.

He made this known at the maiden edition of the Responsible Small Scale Mining Awards held at Alisa Hotel.

The Vice president described the Mining award ceremony as a historic occasion which he is very proud to be a part of.

He opined that he sees the award to be something peculiar because  “all too often, our problem solving turns to focus more on chasing and punishing wrong doers and not recognising and rewarding those who do right and this is what makes this award different”.

“The award recognises players in small Scale Mining sector who despite the temptation to join the wrong doing bandwagon, have decided to stay within the relevant regulatory framework for the country and to operate responsibly,” he explained.

He further stated a number of ways that Ghana has benefited from Small Scale Mining over the years, touting that he believes Small Scale Mining has contributed immensely to Ghana becoming the leading Gold producer in Africa.

Mampong: MCE bans Pragyia operations

Mampong Municipal Assembly has banned the operations of Pragyia on their high way.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Thomas Appiah Kubi speaking to the media said some pragyia drive from Mampong to Agona and Ejura which can cause road accidents on the highway.

According to him, some drivers also do not have enough driving experience to operate on such roads.

He revealed that, they are allowed to operate around the neighboring communities but not on the highway.

In the year 2021 alone, there have been several cases of accidents in the country with most of them being as a result of reckless driving by these “aboboyaa” or “pragya” drivers. Several citizens have lost their lives because they were either hit by an “aboboyaa” or were sitting in one when the accident occurred.
