Adwoa Safo’s absence: Buaben Asamoah gives more details

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Buaben Asamoah has stated that, Adwoa Safo‘s issue is now so glaring because of the fine margins they have in parliament now.

The Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), some months ago, became a subject of public debate following allegations of her impersonation on November 30, 2021.

This was because the Majority side needed the numbers at all costs to approve the 2022 budget, which they did despite the resistance from the Minority.

She has subsequently been absent from parliamentary duties, a development that has raised concerns amidst calls for her seat to be declared vacant.

But according to the former Adentan MP, in the days when there were clear majorities with a huge number, madam Safo wouldn’t have been an issue.

According to him, unfortunately for her, her situation has become prominent because of the bigger primary issues in Parliament which is the numbers.

Mr Asamoah further indicated the party has the situation under control, adding that it is in communication with Miss Safo.

However, he noted he cannot tell when she will be back in Ghana.

Buaben Asamoah is a waste – Kennedy Agyapong

Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy has reacted to calls by the Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Yaw Buaben Asamoah, for him to be disciplined following his utterances against Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Buaben Asamoah who is a former lawmaker for Adenta had said the utterances of Mr Agyapong were unfair to Adwoa Safo and the NPP hence he must be disciplined.

“I don’t think Kennedy should be telling the world what we are discussing indoors, it is not fair to the party at this time. He should be disciplined,” he said.

Mr Agyapong had raised issues against the conduct of Sarah Adwoa Safo.

He said that the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has failed in life for requesting that she should be made a Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.

He wondered why a cabinet minister will now want to occupy a position that is below the rank of a Minister.

But replying to Buaben Asamoah, Kennedy Agyapong said he has failed as a lawyer.

He [Yaw Buaben Asamoah] is a waste to the party. I have told you everything that is going on in the party, what role has he played? The problems we’re facing in the NPP with communication is because of Yaw Buaben Asamoah. His arrogance, he lost because of his arrogance at Adenta and now he is coming out with a tweet.

He again added that, he will form his own political party if all the current executives including yaw Buaben Asamoah are not voted out.

We’re taking a huge risk by trusting Gov’t – UTAG

The University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) has decided to suspend its prolonged industrial action till March 4.

The Association is hoping that by then, they would have reached a favourable consensus with government.

The decision to suspend the strike action was taken on Monday, February 21st, at an emergency meeting held by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG.

UTAG has been on strike since January 10, 2022, over government’s failure to review their conditions of service since 2017.

The association therefore wants government to restore their 2012 conditions of service, which pegged the monthly income of entry-level lecturers at $2,084.

UTAG claims the current arrangement has reduced its members’ basic premiums to $997.84.

Giving further details in an interview with the media, President of UTAG, Prof. Solomon Nunoo said, they're taking a huge risk by trusting in the government.

However, he said, if their gesture of goodwill is abused by the current administration, they will resume their strike action.

Chairman of the Education Committee in Parliament, Hon. Amankwah Asiamah commended UTAG for suspending their strike and said they will do everything until their demands are met.

Bawumia concerned about high fuel prices

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has attributed the consistent increase in fuel prices to the transition in energy usage to renewable by the global community.

He has therefore directed the Ministry of Energy and other allied ministries to formulate strategies that will address prices in fuel and also the use of gas vehicles in the country.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was speaking at a national energy transition forum organized by the ministry of energy in Accra.

He said “In certain places where the energy transition is being implemented people have felt alienated by such policy and they perceive these policies as elitists.

According to him, such persons have the feeling that the elites are out of touch with their lives and are not aware or do not care about what really matters to them is therefore, need everybody on board if they are to succeed in this quest.

Dr. Bawumia commended the Ministry of Energy and the hardworking Minister for Energy Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh for using this approach and his hopeful that at the end of the day the new options that they implement will improve the lives of the people rather than hit the pockets of the poor.

He added that, “We should give equal opportunities to all citizens to enjoy the benefits of the energy transition and ensure social justice in the process.”

He noted that “There is less funding available for oil exploration and exploitation and you are seeing this in an increase in oil prices globally today, as this transition is being talked about and is taking place. But we, in many of the developing countries are facing these very high costs of petroleum prices that is resulting in many economic impacts such as inflation in many countries as prices of goods increase in response to the increase in petroleum prices. So we have to be very aware of where this is going.

The Minister said this when he paid another working visit to Appiatse together with the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee.

Increment of transport fares: Drivers expressed their views

Some drivers within the Kumasi Metropolis have expressed their views following the increment of transport fares by 15% which takes effect on Saturday26th February 2022.

Transport operators in the country have agreed to adjust fares by 15 per cent after negotiating with the government.

The increment will affect shared taxis, intra-city popularly known as ‘trotro’ and intercity transport.

The drivers say the hike has been necessitated by the increase in the price of fuel and the economic hardship the country is facing, which has affected their work.

Member of the Communication Team of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, urged the public to cooperate with the drivers to implement the new charges successfully.

According to the drivers, they are not satisfied with the 155 increment due to the price on the fuel.

According to others, they will only accept the 15% increment if the government scrap the e-levy.

….DRIVERS…..

Some passengers also said, the increment of the transport fares will not help them.

According to them, there will be a lot of confusion between passengers and drivers.
