KATH doctors suspend intended strike action

Members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) have suspended their intended strike action over non-payment of car maintenance allowance and 13th Month Salary for 2020 and 2021.

The strike action was meant to have commenced on February 1 to February 4, 2022.

Vice Chairman of KODA, Dr. Kwaku Nyame speaking to the media said, the suspension of the intended strike came as results of an engagement with the management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) yesterday.

According to him, they took the decision after the hospital’s management and the Health Ministry shown some form of commitment to ending the long-standing stalemate fulfillment of their signed conditions of service in 2019.

He added that, they hope, as agreed, earlier at the meeting of KADA executives with Hospital Management that by the end of working hours on Thursday, February 3, 2022, there will be a clear concise payment schedule.

Members of the Komfo Anokye Doctor’s Association (KADA) yesterday threatened to strike from today, February 1, 2022, over the non-payment of car maintenance allowances and 13th Month Salary for 2020 and 2021.

According to KADA members, the management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has failed to respond to several calls on them to comply with the implementation of their signed conditions of service that has been directed by the Finance Ministry.

Soldiers deployed to Kulungungu, others near Bawku over suspected Jihadist attack

Soldiers have been deployed to Sapeliga, Pulmakom and Kulungungu near the Ghana-Burkina Faso border, over suspected Jihadists’ attack which has resulted in the death of twelve persons and a few others abducted on Sunday, January 30.

Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Supt Simon Peter Akabati speaking to the media said, he has seen few more Military, not to do with the Bawku conflict but Jihadist or the terrorist filtration from neighboring countries so he thinks this Military can help them to patrol the borders to avoid them from coming to disturb our peace.

The affected community is not far from Kulungungu near Pusiga and Sapeliga in the Bawku West Districts.

An eyewitness account suggests some residents of Wariwewu, crossed the border to Kulungugu and Sapeliga

Military helicopters have been seen in the area, especially Sapeliga and Pulmakom whiles ground troupes are also in vantage points monitoring the situation.

District Chief Executive Officer for Pusiga Constituency, Hon. Abdulai Zubeiru speaking to the media said, government has been able to put measures in place to be able to control the borders between Ghana and Burkina Faso following the attacks in Burkina Faso.

According to him, though the borders have been closed but it will be very difficult to control due to the poor nature the boundaries between the two countries.

He added that, the recent happenings in Burkina Faso can be linked to jihadists so they can’t tell which group of people they will be targeting.

Former MP dragged to Special Prosecutor over bribery comment

Ghana Watch Alliance has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate a bribery statement allegedly made by former Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi on a Kumasi-based television station a week ago.

According to the group, the announcement made by the former lawmaker is a clear case of corruption and must be investigated.

Portions of the petition sighted reads:

“We believe that for a former minister of state to publicly sit on television station to voice out his personal bribery payments in the past with such high esteem cannot be overlooked in our quest to fight corruption in this country.”

In November 2021, the Special Prosecutor invited the nominee for Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, Alex Sarfo- Kantanka, for questioning over corruption and corruption related offenses.

This was after he publicly demanded a refund of monies paid as bribe to some assembly members to entice them to endorse his candidature.

Former Member of Parliament for Ejisu constituency, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, has disclosed he paid 5,000 cedis in order to entice delegates to vote for him in the 2020 parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party.

Mr Aduomi says despite paying the enticement fee, he lost the election to his strongest opponent.

“I paid a lot of money during the primaries. I paid 5,000 cedis to each of the 600 delegates but I lost the election,” he told a Kumasi-based radio station.

Apiate Explosion: EPA deploys emergency escort for transport of hazardous substances

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has indicated that it is deploying emergency escort services to transporters of hazardous substances in the country.

Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Henry Kokofu condemned the transportation of explosives across communities without any safety measures.

According to him, the EPA has begun strict enforcement of the safety rules to safeguard the residents where the hazardous substances are carried to and fro.

He added that, they are seriously considering emergency escort service which will immediately deploy pickups having flashlights and so forth.

He noted that, any person who will be given licence as a transporter and deals in hazardous substances will sign on to/subscribe to EPA escort services.

Hon. Kokofu again advised Ghanaians to desist from trooping to a scene with their cameras to snap pictures.

According to him, such scenes are a “no go area” for civilians except Police Officers and Fire Service personals.

Govt presents buses, pickups to selected Senior High Schools

The Vice-President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Monday on behalf of the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration presented 150 vehicles comprising of 50 buses and 100 pickups to some selected Senior High Schools in the country.

Dr. Bawumia presenting the items said, “It is indeed an honor for me to handover a total of 150 additional vehicles comprising of 50 buses and 100 pickups to the Senior High School”.

According to him, it is well documented that the availability of good transportation for students positively impacts the quality of education delivery and efficient transportation systems in the schools increases student enrollment and encourages many students to stay in school.

He added that, a dependable transportation system in schools improves the safety of students and makes teachers and students more productive.

President Akufo-Addo’s right-hand man further noted the vehicles among other things to be given to schools are to provide the necessary infrastructure and logistics to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Dr. Bawumia again said, the government in the last five years has committed to increasing access to quality education and provide vehicles to senior high schools to support the transportation of the outgrowing population in the schools.
