E-levy implementation: Our businesses will collapse- MoMo Agents cry

Some Mobile Money Merchants have cried bitterly following the implementation of the E-levy which will be effective from 1st May, 2022.

According to them, majority of them will lose their jobs due to its implementations.

They added that, their customers have earlier told them that, they will stop the electronic transactions should incase the government approve the e-levy.

They made these comments after the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has indicated that the implementation of the 1.5% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) will be done in phases.

It indicated that the decision to phase the implementation is due to its assessment of the readiness of the charging entities.

In a letter to all charging entities on Thursday, the GRA said it has observed that some of the charging entities were yet to fully integrate with the E-levy Management System hence its decision.

“Following Ghana Revenue Authority’s assessment of the general readiness of some Charging Entities to integrate with the E-levy Management System, the Commissioner-General has decided on a modified phased-approach for the implementation of the Levy from 1st of May 2022.”

However some merchants also believe that, their business will continue to flow regardless of the e-levy implementation.

They added that, it is the habit of Ghanaians to complain but will eventually accepts it as time goes on.

Galamsey: Fourteen (14) Regions Devastated by Illegal Mining Activities – Mining Consultant

Mining Consultant base in the USA, Solomon Owusu and his team have revealed that, fourteen regions have been devastated by illegal mining activities in the country.

According to him, the actual causes of the menace are poorly understood by the government, hence focusing on unnecessary expenditures that do not yield any significant outcome since 2017.

Speaking to the media, he said, the possible solutions to this problem are that, the government should ascertain whether they can control water bodies that have been polluted not to mix with other water bodies.

He added that, they put proper measures in place between the government and the small scale miners on how to cover the land properly after mining.

He noted that, water bodies have been contaminated with dangerous chemicals like mercury, cyanide, lead and arsenic, these have led to skyrocketing costs of water treatments for human consumption hence the need for the government to take notice.

Solomon Owusu stressed that, if possible miners can apply for a license online rather than going through stress in acquiring one.

He believes that, the implementation of these suggestions can help ensure environmentally-friendly small-scale mining operations.

E-levy will not affect tithes and offering – John Kumah

The Deputy Finance Minister, Dr John Kumah, has denied the assertion that payment of tithes and other religious obligations will be affected by the Electronic Transaction levy (E-levy).

Dr John Kumah on Friday said government is not taxing the tithes and offering of religious persons in the country.

According to him, it’s a complete lie and falsehood that, e-levy will tax tithe and offerings because e-levy does not affect church tithe, offering or Zakat.

Dr. Kumah comment is in reaction to claims by the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George that E-levy will affect tithes.

But the Deputy Minister in an interview said ‘If churches register as merchants, there is no way payment to that platform will be exempted”.

He added that, if you decide to pay your tithe of GH¢2000, exactly GH¢2000 will go to the church.

Dr John Kumah, therefore, entreated the public to disregard claims that the levy would affect tithes and offerings.
