Mahama tackles EC over the use of Ghana Card for registration

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his frustrations towards the Electoral Commission (EC) for deciding to use Ghana Card as the sole identification to register for voters ID ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Addressing the NDC supporters at Dzodze in the Ketu North of the Volta region as part of his campaign today said, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi and the Minority Caucus are fighting in Parliament against the constitutional instrument that says that if you don’t have Ghana Card you can’t register adding that, they can’t understand the sense of which the EC are pushing for this.

According to him, though they are not against Ghana Card because he himself has a Ghana card and encouraged all Ghanaians including to his members to register for their Ghana card but NIA says they don’t have money stressing that, they (NIA) have the cards at the warehouse but they can’t pay and take and even if they are able to pay, they can’t go around and give everybody their card.

He noted that, some Ghanaians find it difficult to acquire their Ghana Card especially those who are far away from the District office.

He further disclosed that, he can’t ascertain why the EC is refusing to allow parents who know the age of their wards to guarantee for them.

John Dramani Mahama again said, the NPP will make sure that, Ghanaians who are residing at their strongholds will get their Ghana Card with ease but it will be difficult for residents who are not living within their strongholds to get theirs with ease.

Dr. Nsiah-Asare calls for legislation on cornea transplant

Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Presidential Advisor on Health, has called on legislators to expedite the legislation for corneal and other organ transplantation in the country.

He also appealed to the public to commit to being tissue/organ donors to help cure the over 90 per cent of patients suffering from cornea blindness in the country and bring an end to the disease.

The legislation would permit the harvest of vital organs and in this case cornea to save patients.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare made the call at the first ever inaugural cornea transplant summit in Ghana and said as a matter of urgency the existing document needed to be reviewed to reflect current practices.

The event organised by the Ophthalmological Society of Ghana with support from HCP Cure Blindness, a United States non-governmental agency, was on the theme: “Paving the Way to Cure Cornea Blindness in Ghana.”

He said the Ghana Blindness and Visual Impairment study of 2015 indicates that 11.2 per cent of the blind population in Ghana were blind as a result of Corneal scars translating into about 25,000 Ghanaians with blindness.

“Blindness, unfortunately, has a workforce and socio-economic impact that affects the individual, relations and the Society,” he said.

The Presidential Advisor said the importance of corneal transplantation legislation and the promotion of eye and organ donation was therefore crucial to achieving total socio-economic transformation of the unfortunate patients and the nation for “health is wealth.”

He said Ghana had a well-trained human resource base and facilities to start a structured corneal transplantation programme in some hospitals in the country.

Why are you not truthful to the public – Ankobra residents to gov’t?

Residents of Ankobra in the in the Ellembelle District have expressed their anger towards the Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Hon. George Mireku Duker claiming that, river Ankobra has turned to its normal state.

It would be recalled that the Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Hon. George Mireku Duker some days ago during a visit to the area, credited the clearing state of the river to the government’s regulatory and monitoring agencies’ efforts, and said the situation is encouraging, and therefore the Ministry will work to see the same improvement with other river bodies.

However, some residents speaking to the media urged the public to disregard claims that the downstream portion of River Ankobra has improved.

According to them, each time it rains the color of the river changes adding that images are circulating, that say the river is somehow clean but the sea sometimes pushes away the polluted water making it look a bit cleaner.
