US Vice Prez Kamala Harris to visit Ghana
US Vice President, Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Dougas Emhoff will from Saturday, March 25 embark on a three-nation tour of Africa.
The tour will begin with a visit to Ghana before successive trips to Tanzania and Zambia.
“The Vice President’s visit will build on the recent U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit that President [Joe] Biden hosted in Washington in December 2022,” a statement issued by the White House on Monday, March 13 said.
Council on Foreign Relations, Michelle Gavin says the visit is very much of a piece with the US Africa strategy that was actually rolled out in South Africa not too long ago as the Biden administration tries to reframe its relationships on the continent in a much more global context and look for partners to try and build a reformed, rules-based international order.
According to her, the high-level visits are absolutely intended to signal a commitment to finding overlaps in our Venn diagram interests.
In Ghana, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to meet President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and some government officials including her opposite number Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
She will discuss regional and global priorities with the officials. Among these priorities are democracy, sustainable economic growth, food security and the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.
“The Vice President will strengthen people-to-people ties and engage with civil society, including young leaders, business representatives, entrepreneurs, and members of the African Diaspora.”
She will conclude her visit on Sunday, April 2.

PNC, NDP other parties back EC’s proposed CI for 2024 polls
A number of minority political parties including the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) are in support of the proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) being championed by the Electoral Commission for the continuous registration of voters.
Under the new CI, the Ghana Card will be the sole identification document for voter registration – a move the National Democratic Congress (NDC) together with its Members of Parliament have opposed stating that it will disenfranchise Ghanaians.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, General Secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Citizen Ato Dadzie argued that the new CI will eliminate challenges including chaos at registration centers among others.
He is therefore calling on Members of Parliament to back the proposed C.I. while urging government to give the National Identification Authority more resources to enable it register more Ghanaians onto the Ghana card database.
“Ghana has come a long way with our democracy, and so we should not allow baseless suspicions to erase all the successes we have attained over the years. We should channel our energies to implore the government to release resources to NIA to honor their mandate so that we can adhere to the laws that mandate us to use the National ID as evidence of identity to register as a new voter.

The group again accused the NDC of double standard.
According to Citizen Ato Dadzie, the same EC whom the NDC are opposing their C.I are the same people (EC) who conducted the recently ended their elections of their National Officers.
